With a little bit of courage…

If you’ve ever tried to remove dandelion from a plot of land, you know how resilient this sunny little plant is. Its delicate puffball seeds and soft spiny petals are deceiving because its roots run DEEP. Its French name, dent-de-lion, or lion’s teeth (because of the shape of its petals) is a reminder to have a little courage in the face of our deepest wounds.

Dandelion is a survivor. It can withstand hardship and thrives in disturbed earth. Its extensive taproot grows deep and breaks up compacted earth while pulling up its juiciest nutrients to feed itself and rejuvenate the soil. Dandelion’s mineral-rich roots, flowers, and leaves do the same for our bodies and spirits, too. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it a helpful herb for skin problems and light fevers, and its bitterness can be a tonic for the liver and gallbladder. Dandelion’s bitter medicine can be hard to swallow, but sometimes we need the bitter to balance the sweet. Its bitterness is a reminder to accept the lessons of life along with its joys so we can use them to move forward. We are not defined by the things that happen to us and we can draw strength and courage from them, just as Dandelion pulls up vital nutrients through its deep taproot.
